artist's statement
I photograph to provoke a reaction from the viewer, a memory, a story, an emotion, or a mood. I want what I photograph to feel relatable to invite the viewer to enter. I photograph looking up and down seeking depth and detail in changing perspectives. I have been exploring the dynamic of black and white photographs capturing textures and patterns and the balancing of positive and negative spaces with the interplay of natural light and shadows. I want my images to be in the moment, taking a breath.
I am inspired to draw by peoples’ faces and in my creative process, as I seek to capture both the likeness and essence of the person. I enjoy the texture that graphite creates and the lights and dark that when blended and connect, form the definition of facial features. Using photographs allows for a deeper exploration of detail. Graphite is my sculpting tool.
